Swedish massage

The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It not only stretches the myofascial tissue but ligament and tendon as well, keeping them healthy and malleable. Swedish massage also effects the nervous system. Massage can reduce the SNS (Sympathetic Nervous System) thereby potentially increasing the PSNS (Parasympathetic Nervous System), hence why massage treatments are often referred to as relaxation massage. Massage therapy has proven beneficial for many chronic conditions, including various soft tissue pain (injury, tired or overused muscle), arthritis, fatigue, high/low blood pressure, diabetes, immunity suppression, infertility, smoking cessation, and depression.

Massage therapy can assist with:

  • Chronic conditions, such as arthritis, fatigue, high/low blood pressure, diabetes, immunity suppression, infertility, and smoking cessation
  • Improving range of motion in joints/soft tissue
  • Enhancing immunity by stimulating lymphatic flow (the body’s natural defense system)
  • Increasing nutrition to weak, tight, or atrophied muscles
  • Improving the condition of the body’s largest organ—the skin
  • Reducing depression and anxiety
  • Promoting tissue regeneration, reducing scar tissue and stretch marks
  • Reducing post-surgery adhesions and swelling
  • Reducing spasms and cramping
  • Releasing endorphins (amino acids that work as the body’s natural painkiller)
  • Relieving headaches and migraines

In conclusion

A massage commonly creates a sense of calm and clarity. The emotional balance that body work provides is as valuable as the physical benefits. It is estimated that upward of 90% of disease is stress-related. Massage can, without a doubt, help to manage the stress of everyday living. This translates into:

  • Reduced anxiety
  • Enhanced sleep quality
  • Greater energy
  • Improved concentration
  • Reduced fatigue
  • Greater healing potential
